The Stumbling Blocks To The Advancement Of Our Nation.
Nigeria, otherwise known as the "The Giant Of Africa",has been set free through attaining Independence by the British Government from October 1st 1960. Since these years. No tangible evidence of development was recorded. If one puzzle over the rate at which countries who got their Independence after us had advanced, one can't help asking the question'Why?'Why haven't we advanced? The answers are not far to seek.
Corruption is one problem affecting the rate of advancement for this country. Leaders of nowadays - be it military or civilian leaders, are all corrupt. They have excessive desire for materials, they will go into world of corruption whereby resources will be gather instantly. Nigeria is blessed with unreasonable leaders, who pillage our resources as soon as they mount the throne of power. For instance,a leader who hardly had an ordinary car,as soon as he mounted the throne of power,he became a proud owner of private jet with less than a year in office.
The painful aspect of this corruption is that most of the money that is stolen from Nigeria's coffers are still kept in the banks of those civilized countries which use such money to run the economy of their own country.
Also, not to put the cat before the horse, malpractice is also affecting the advancement of this country. I Nigeria today, many forms of malpractice are perpetrated. However, the two major identifiable ones are "Electoral and Examination malpractices". While student bribe the invigilator and supervisor and sometimes have sexual relation with them, politicians set up some gang in order to help them in election rigging. They turn a deaf ear to an adage that says "Linking hot soup requires patience",they will do everything just for them to get to the position of leadership and when got there, they behave abnormally. And for those students who bribe the supervisors, unfortunately for them, they will still fail the examination.
In addition, religious and ethnic crisis also have negative impact on the advancement of this country. Nigeria is made up of more than three hundreds ethnic groups but only three are considered to be the ethnic groups which are Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba and many different religions. As a result of their inabilities to understand and tolerate one another, they launch violent attack on one another for the purpose of guiding or protecting their own ethnic or religious affiliation. No meaningful activities can be carried out in atmosphere of war. Although, the federal government set up an act to check on ethno - religious suspicious, known as"National Youth Service Corp(NYSC)",the act still constitute a barrier whereby graduates who belong to a particular age bracket will be given letter of exception, that means they won't be allowed to serve their father land. Even though they are bonafide citizens of this country. The fulani/herdsmen and Yoruba crisis is a critical example of this ethno - religious crisis.
To add to it, Robbery is also affecting the advancement of our Nation. Robbery is categorized into "Pen and Armed Robbery". The most saddening one is armed robbery. This is as a result of unemployment. The popular saying says that"An idle hand is the devil's workshop". Large proportion of armed robbers today are University graduates, who speak fluent, polished English. Many of these armed robbers are hardworking, and ready to leave the shameful act of robbery which they do in order to keep their body and soul together.
Moreover, Insecurity also have a negative impact on this country. From years back now, that Nigeria is facing calamities like kidnapping, looting of private and public properties, unwanted killings to mention but a few is no longer a news. Attack from intra, inter and external. This have a major set back to the advancement of the country. Not only Nigeria are fearing, but also foreigners panic of losing the life and properties as a result of unsecured environment. As for this, they do not bother themselves of coming to invest and and establish in our country. This insecurity serves as a stepping Stones to robbery, kidnapping, ethno - religious crisis and so on .
Hands cannot be kept folded as we are expecting our beloved country to compete with advanced ones. Firstly, leaders should be screened before and after mounting the throne of power to allow transparency governance. To allow peaceful coexistence between the ethno - religious, the age barrier should be removed from the National Youth Service Corp to allow Nigerian more associate with one another. Severe punishment should be given to people who engaged in malpractices without a scared cow when elite are involved especially in electoral malpractice. Security operatives should be strengthen to fore-shall the crisis of national proportion.
In conclusion, there should be amendment and re-structure to Nigeria constitution and governmental policy, whereby socio-ethnic and ethno -religious would be looked into as a matter of urgency. With these considered done ,I know will be great and we would all have a sense of belonging.
God Bless Nigeria 🇳🇬
